How to be Insulting to Fans

When George Gershwin died in 1937, there were many musical tributes written in praise of the great composer. One of his fans persuaded his friend, Oscar Levant, to hear his own composition. Levant listened to the piece and then told the proud composer:

'I think it would have been better if you had died and Gershwin had written the elegy.'
